1 Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world's largest (but not longest) steel arch bridge.
2 Its total length including approach spans is 1149 metres (3770 feet) and its arch span is 503 metres (1650 feet).
3 The top of the arch is 134 metres (440 feet) above sea level.
4 The 49 metre (161 feet) wide deck makes the bridge the widest longspan bridge in the world. Clearance for shipping under the deck is also 49 metres (161 feet).
5 The bridge was opened on March 19th 1932 after six years of construction.
6 The total steelwork weighs 52,800 tonnes (58202 tons), including 39,000 tonnes (42990 tons) in the arch and over 6 million hand driven steel rivets.
7 The surface area that requires painting, is equal to about the surface area of 60 footy fields. Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) used to be maintenance painter on the bridge.
8 The bridge looks a lot bigger when you're standing at the bottom of it.
